Curly or Straight?

So a while back, I colored my hair.

Typically, most people would describe my natural hair color as dark blond or dirty blond. I have gotten hi-lites in the past and have received compliments. I've always like the looks of the hi-lites, except for when they start growing out.

But this time, I went darker. One of the reasons was so that my hi-lites would be somewhat covered up and "blend" with the roots. Plus, I just wanted to see something different. Now the box told me that if my hair color matched the color in the little square, then my new shade would look like the color in the other square.

Now maybe I picked up an old, faded box.... Or maybe I left it on a little too long. But either way, it was dark! (And did I mention that I was doing this late on a Sunday evening and I had to work the next day?)

Well, I had to live with it. Suck it up and deal with it, you know? There was nothing I could do at that late juncture anyways. I did the best I could the next morning....

It was really easier than I thought it was going to be. I suppose that's because I work with (mostly) well-mannered people. Most of my fellow employees couldn't make eye contact with me. The few that did talk to me, didn't exactly compliment; rather, it was more of a comment. Stating the obvious "You've changed your hair."...or..."You must have colored your hair."

Only one 'jerk-y' comment: "Wow! Now your hair matches your coat." (It was still winter and I was wearing a black jacket while I was in the cafe picking up my lunch."

One really nice comment came from company maintenance guy as he was completing some renovations on my office. He did a double take which I caught. I figured I'd let him off the hook by making the statement out loud for him. "Yes, I colored my hair. And yes, it's very dark." And he replies, "Well, I going to say that it makes you look younger."

That, for many days to come, was the nicest comment/compliment I received regarding my new color. His mother must have raised him right. My own family gave me the old family snub. I guess they figured that I just felt inside my heart their unspoken compliments..... Hmmm, not quite kids (and spouse).

A few months have past and my fabulous new cut has grown out a little, my color has faded somewhat. And I know you know what it's like when your style grows out enough to make it look like it's not a style, but rather frumpy.

So I've been toying with the idea of possibly perming my hair. Sort of Jackie-O-Marilyn-Monroe-Madonna-ish. Which led me to use the small curling iron this morning. It actually went well. When I say "well", I mean that the curls came out really quite nice. However, the now curled, grown-out, frumpy style didn't look very stylish. Nope. More along the lines of a 5th grader who begged her mom to put curlers in her hair the night before a school program and then went to school thinking she was as hot as one of Charlie's Angels. Deja vous!

Hmmm..... maybe the flat-iron will come in handy tomorrow morning.
